Simone Athena Scigousky (She/They) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Chicago, IL. After graduating from SAIC in 2022 with a B.F.A.A.E, Scigousky has taught visual art at Walter Payton College Prep High School and Gallery 37, and currently teaches an After School Matters program – Teen Arts Council – at Arts + Public Life. Scigousky seeks to empower young people through art activist and social justice centered curriculum. Collaboration, communication, and community are the cornerstones of their pedagogy. Learn more about their work as an educator here.
In her artistic practice, Scigousky offers an ecological lens through which to view her personal memories, experiences, and perspective. With a technicolor palette, she explores the relationship between her queerness, femininity, Greek-American culture, and childhood. Their practice allows them to authentically
represent themself through a campy, sparkly, and highly exaggerated aesthetic. It’s with the playful and intuitive experimentation of color, mark, and form that Scigousky embraces both tradition and modernity. Her work documents the ebbs and flows of growing out of an oppressive, religious, and gendered hierarchy and into an ever-changing, challenging, and better self.
